Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero. Within the span of a week, ICE has claimed the lives of another two men, both of whom were fathers.
On Tuesday the 7th, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was subjected to a Kavanaugh Stop, a legal precedent that allows ICE agents to detain a person for having brown skin or an accent. This stop would turn deadly as an ICE agent discharged their service weapon into the 53 year old. After this fatal shot was disharged, the agents decided to handcuff and throw his dying body to the ground as he groaned in agony. TThree other men were in the van that witnessed Araujo's unlawful public execution. Reports indicate that ICE has attempted to intimidate these men to sign self deportation orders, which, as you can imagine, is an effective tactic when you murdered their friend just three feet away from where they were detained. ICE is alleging that Aruajo attempted to ram the agents with his vehicle; no evidence for this claim has been provided. Two of the men in the van maintain that at no point were any of the ICE agents in front of the van. Other witnesses also stated that they saw no ramming or attempts to ram the agents. Aruajo is survived by a wife and two sons.
Not a week later, on Monday the 13th, Joan Sebastian Guerrero met the same fate. Details are still emerging about these events but DHS claims that he was attmpting to ram them with his vehicle and for their safety they had to shoot Aruajo in front of his young daughter. His final words, that he repeated over and over again: "I tried to stop! I tried to stop!".
ICE needs to be abolished, prosecuted, and publicized. The abolition of ICE must happen now; this agency has shown itself to be a danger to the public and an unnaccountable militaristic force that has no moral barriers to killing civillians as a first measure. Immigration must be restructured with empathy instead of enforcement for sport. A foundational shift to a demilitarized enforcement of laws and a framework in which we treat undocumented immigration like what it is... a paperwork issue. Step two is prosecuting every agent that has committed a crime. We know that countless crimes have been committed in both broad daylight and behind closed doors ranging from murder to rape. There needs to be a committee dedicated to scrubbing through body cam footage of every ICE agent accused of committing a crime and levying charges against these agents that are being fiercely protected by this fascist administration. The next step needs to be a public show of what happens when you are an enforcer of fascism in the country. When you commit a crime in the name of maintaining a fascist administration, we need to make it clear that there will be strict repercussions. The crimes that these agents have committed are worthy of very long prison sentences, and we, the people, will settle for nothing less..
Each and every one of the subsequent names is a person who was either directly and violently killed by ICE or died while in ICE concentration camps. It is easy to see a statistic and disassociate that from person hood, but we must remember, every one of these people were brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, children of a person who now has to go on without them. ICE did that and continues to do that.
